Mosaic shoulder bag – free pattern

There are never enough handbags, bags, etc. That's why I keep trying new models. This shoulder bag is very interesting and has so many variations.

Is very flexible, it can be worn for almost any occasion and it's much easier to make it than you might think. I think a patient and dedicated beginner will manage as well.

You can use nearly any material you like and you can make the bag any size you like. You can vary the size of your bag by using different type of material and size of hook and/or increase/decrease the size of the basic square.

This bag is roughly 40cm (16’’) wide and 30(12’’) high.

One square is 16cm (6,5’’)x 16cm (6,5’’) and you will need 11 of them + one triangle.

The strap can be as long or short as you will make them, they are adjustable, in this case 110cm(44’’).

You will also need the button that I crocheted around, the hardware and some suitable material for the lining. I lined each square separately and the strap as well (for strengthening).

I tried to make a small diagram/chart - the first three rows - that, together with the links below, could help you when crocheting.

  2. This is a really nice bag design. Granny square style projects always have so much personality, and I like how this one combines multiple squares to create a structured shoulder bag. Being able to adjust the size by changing the yarn, hook size, or number of squares also makes the pattern really flexible for different uses.

The tip about lining each square and the strap is a great idea too. Crochet bags can stretch over time, so reinforcing them with lining helps them hold their shape and makes them much more durable for everyday use.

It’s always interesting to see how handmade bag designs like this relate to other pouch and bag styles used in different industries. While crochet bags focus on craftsmanship and texture, modern pouch designs focus more on structure and sealing depending on the product inside. If anyone is curious about how those types of pouches are designed, there are some examples here: custom size mylar bags.

Thanks for sharing the pattern and resources. It looks like a really fun project to try!
