Multipurpose wreath – free crochet pattern

Hi,
In the last few days I was working on this wreath. I like wreaths a lot, so I came up with one I can use all year around. I made myself a promise that I would only use materials I had got at home. I have one left over skeins of all sorts of yarn, cotton, mohair etc, and its just taking space in my crocheting corner. I’m sure we all know about that scenario. And this is great way to use some of these “leftovers”.
Since it is Christmas time I used bells to decorate the wreath. You can replace the bells with an Easter motive at the Easter, or any other motive to suite your purpose, or just leave it as it is for all year around.

This pattern is suitable for any type of wreath polystyrene bases.
The one on the picture is 26cm(10,5”) in diameter

You need:
Any yarn, cotton, mohair or any other kind of material of your choice
Crochet hook – I mainly used G/4mm and H/5mm
Yarn Needle
Polystyrene wreath base
And or anything you would like to decorate your wreath with.

Terms/Abbreviations: I used US terminology
ch         chain
slst       slip stitch
sc          single crochet
hdc       half  double crochet
dc         double crochet
tr/ddc    treble crochet
st          stitch

The wreath base:

I started with simple wreath base, using batik light mohair and Anchor metallic yarn together (you can see the pictures above). I was working with H/5mm.

I ch23, hdc into 3rd ch from the hook, hdc in next 20 st., turn.
Each of the next rows has got 2hdc’s.
This amount of stitches is my suggestion only. It depends on the size of wreath you are using.

The strip I made measured cca 85cm(34”) and I sewed it carefully together at the back of the wreath. It always looks all-wrong but you need to sew row to row and it will somehow bend nicely into a circle.

I used flowers and leaves you can see in detail below. You can use any kind of, and/or amount of flowers and leaves you feel like you may need.

Flower/Star: I made 13

Round 1: Magic ring, ch3(counts as dc) and 14dc’s into the ring, slst. into 3rd ch from first ch3(15dc’s)
Round 2: */ch6, sc into 3rd ch from the hook, hdc into next, dc into next, tr into next, skip 2 dc’s from round 1, slst into next dc from round 1/*, repeat 4 more times. (5-pointed flower/star).

For the center of the flower I used material you can see on the picture below. I just made a knot and sewed it to the magic ring. You can crochet a little ball as well.

You can leave the wreath as it is and use it all year around. It was just for Christmas that I added the bells.

Bells: I made 2

Inc 1 sc by working 2 sc in next sc.
Worked in the round in a circle.
Round 1: Work 6 sc in the magic ring
Round 2: Inc 1 sc in every sc (12 sc).
Round 3: *(1 sc in next sc, inc 1 sc in next sc)*, repeat from *-*(18 sc).
Rounds 4-7: Work 1 sc in every sc. (you can make more or less rounds depending on how tall you would like the bell to be).
Round 8: *(1 sc in next sc, 2hdc in next sc)*, repeat from *-*(9 sc/18 hdc).

I have made some more free patterns for Christmas decorations in past and you can find another bell (bigger) or snowflake in this post:

There it is. You should have nice, versatile and multipurpose wreath now, or an inspiration for one at least.
I’m sure even dedicated beginner can follow this pattern.
If you come up with any problems or difficulties, write to me, and I’ll be more than happy to help.

Have a nice week
Clara
