Checkered cowl – Free pattern

Size: (this scarf) approx. 140cm (56”) length, 40 cm (16’’) high.

You can vary the size of your cowl by using different type of material and size of knitting needles and/or adding/taking off the rows.

You need: (for this size scarf)

I used leftovers yarn that I found at home – all together cca 300g

K/7mm needles

        Terms/Abbreviations: I used US terminology

st.    Stitch

K     Knit stitch
P      Purl stitch

*()* Repeat what’s in the brackets

Pattern:

Cast on 55 +2 end/start stitches (1 from each side – first/last st. of the row). Turn.

 Row 1: Knit 1st st., *(K5, P5)* rep., *()* 4 more times, K5, knit last st.

Row 2: Knit 1st st., *(P5, K5)* rep., *()* 4 more times, P5, knit last st.

Row 3: Knit 1st st., *(K5, P5)* rep., *()* 4 more times, K5, knit last st.

Row 4: Knit 1st st., *(P5, K5)* rep., *()* 4 more times, P5, knit last st.

Row 5: Knit 1st st., *(K5, P5)* rep., *()* 4 more times, K5, knit last st.

Row 6: Knit 1st st., *(P5, K5)* rep., *()* 4 more times, P5, knit last st.

 Row 7: Knit 1st st., *(P5, K5)* rep., *()* 4 more times, P5, knit last st.

Row 8: Knit 1st st., *(K5, P5)* rep., *()* 4 more times, K5, knit last st.

Row 9: Knit 1st st., *(P5, K5)* rep., *()* 4 more times, P5, knit last st.

Row 10: Knit 1st st., *(K5, P5)* rep., *()* 4 more times, K5, knit last st.

Row 11: Knit 1st st., *(P5, K5)* rep., *()* 4 more times, P5, knit last st.

Row 12: Knit 1st st., *(K5, P5)* rep., *()* 4 more times, K5, knit last st.

I repeated rows 1-12 19 more times to reach a length of 140cm (56”).

Finishing:

Now you just need to finish the cowl. Sew the ends together as you can see in the picture above  (square to square).

Make sure you always repeat all 12 rows, in case you make the cowl longer or shorter, otherwise it would not look good in the connection area.

Have a nice week

Clara
